For years I have performed non-traditional
weddings in Santa Fe. These weddings are not religious, they are
spiritual; for persons of different backgrounds looking for
simplicity and meaning. My ceremony offers a belief system of
peace, trust and the universal power of love and forgiveness. We
celebrate Spirit; as we remember the importance of grace,
laughter, listening to our heart, giving unconditional love and
honoring our connection with Nature.
This presents another way, other than the
shoulds and musts of old rules and rigidity, plus the stress of a
large wedding. Many couples opt for simplicity and natural
circumstances. The meaning and informality increase with a small
group. I always encourage flexibility and open mindedness. First,
the ceremony reflects the couple involved, and so can include
readings and notes from absent friends and family. Second,
location can be chosen from my lists of gardens, chapels, homes
and our beautiful mountains.
Some other ideas incorporated into the
occasion: the ceremony is calligraphed into a small handmade book
which is presented to the couple, children of the blended family
are included, the rings are blessed by all, and the couple is
invited to plant a tree in honor of this day. It is a comfortable
event, where dress can be up or down.
Great numbers of couples come to Santa Fe to
be married. Indeed, it is a perfect place with its beauty, history
and charm. However, I warn anyone prone to altitude illness to
remember this is 7,000 ft..Having lived here for 30 years, I can
